# Directed Reading Program at Purdue This program pairs an undergraduate student with a graduate student or a postdoc that is going to mentor them on a new mathematics topic in a reading course environment. Note that for undergraduates having taken a proof based course is going to be helpful. Please register by **Monday, January 8, 2024** if you want to participate in Spring 2024 by filling out the relevant form: - Form for Undergrad mentees:  [https://forms.gle/o99hgq1mEoPynSnU8](https://forms.gle/o99hgq1mEoPynSnU8) - Form for Graduate mentors: [https://forms.gle/WpADVWLTv3UxkUEo6](https://forms.gle/WpADVWLTv3UxkUEo6) --- ## The structure of the Directed Reading Program: - Mentors and Mentees will agree to a topic or a project they will work on for the duration of the semester. This topic or project idea needs to be sent to [email protected] ideally by January 21st but by January 28th, 2024 at the latest. - Mentors and Mentees will meetup at least once a week for 1 hour to discuss the material. The structure of this can be in many forms such as the mentee presenting what they have learned or asking questions and the mentor clarifying and giving feedback. - At the end of the semester, undergrad mentees will give 10-minute presentations. The presentation can be on a project they have completed with the graduate mentor, it can be an overview on what they have learned or specific theorems/concepts. - The presentation can be done on the chalkboard or digitally. This is also a good opportunity to learn LaTeX by using Beamer as well. --- ### For Graduate students/Postdocs This is a great opportunity to gain experience in mentoring and teaching a more advanced topic compared to the usual courses that graduate students teach at Purdue. Additionally, one way of solidifying knowledge in an area is by explaining concepts to someone with a different mathematical background. --- ### For Undergrads: For undergrads, you will learn advanced topics outside of the standard math curriculum and gain experience that will prepare you for graduate school.
